Stubborn focus on existing businesses, current core competencies and established processes is a lost business proposition. Holding the status quo would be the easy thing to do in the short run, but since change is a continuous phenomenon, only leaders facing challenges and actively engaging in change will make it in the long run.
When the business environment changes, an organization has to follow suit and make adjustments: New strategies, new concepts, new cost structures, new business plans, new procedures, et cetera. The best way to deal with this situation is to envision change as an opportunity, and to proactively promote change; the only other option is to stall and lose sustainability by the day. It is surprising how many companies resist change. Why? People tend to hold on to traditional concepts; enthusiastic innovators are a rare species. Empirical data, however, shows that effective change management can break the resistance to change, and translate into active participation in new developments. Change management is the capability of motivating coworkers to embrace change, and therefore is a vital management competence.
